THE NEW YEAR THAT NEVER CAME

December 20, 1989. Romania is on the brink of revolution, but few dare to speak. Life appears to go on as usual: censored theater plays, demolished homes, mass rallies, and the paradox of artists mocking the regime even as they prepare New Year’s tributes to Ceaușescu. In their cold apartments, ordinary people still grapple with age-old struggles — family conflicts, nostalgia, love, resentment — while the Secret Police watches from the shadows. Six seemingly parallel stories converge at the sound of a firecracker, culminating in the end of an era and the fall of a regime.

Director Bogdan Mureșanu

An award-winning Romanian writer, screenwriter, and filmmaker, Bogdan Mureșanu transitioned from literature and advertising to cinema with equal success. His short The Christmas Gift, shortlisted for the 2020 Academy Awards, garnered over 200 festival selections and 72 awards, including the Grand Prix at Clermont-Ferrand. His latest work, The Magician, premiered at the 2025 Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
